How remote works

The same design
discipline,
anywhere.

Most of our design discipline does not require being on your property. Site analysis can be conducted from high-resolution photography, drone footage, topographic surveys, soil test results, and a detailed video walkthrough. We have designed properties in New Hampshire, California, Arizona, and overseas using this model.

The remote consultation is not a lesser engagement. It is the same design rigor applied through a different site-reading toolkit. The deliverable is a complete estate blueprint - planting plan, hardscape specification, soil amendment protocol, phased installation schedule - designed for your specific site and executable by qualified local professionals.

We also provide a vetted local execution pathway. We help you identify and brief the right landscape contractors, nurseries, and specialists in your area. The design does not die on paper because we have thought through how it gets built.

This model was built for second home owners, international clients, and owners of properties in markets where finding a qualified regenerative landscape designer is difficult. Which is most markets.

Remote estate design project
Distance is not a constraint

The same design discipline, anywhere.

Site analysis from photography, surveys, and video walkthroughs. A complete estate blueprint delivered remotely. Executed through vetted local professionals.

How it works

Four steps to a remote design.

01  Discovery call

Understand the property and the vision.

A focused 60-minute conversation about your property, your goals, your timeline, and the kind of place you want it to become. We discuss what you have sent us and ask the questions that will shape the design.

02  Site documentation

We tell you exactly what to send.

A specific documentation kit: photo protocol, video walkthrough guide, soil test instructions, and any survey or topographic data you have. We have refined this over multiple remote engagements and it captures what we actually need.

03  Custom blueprint

The complete design document.

Planting plan, hardscape specification, soil amendment protocol, phased installation schedule, and species sourcing guide - all adapted for your regional climate and local plant availability. Designed for your property, not for a generic site type.

04  Execution pathway

A plan that can actually be built.

We identify and brief qualified local professionals who can execute the design. We remain available for questions during installation and can review progress photography to ensure the design is being executed correctly.

The design discipline travels. What does not travel is the willingness to skip the site analysis. We never do that, regardless of where the property is.

Who this is for

Three situations where remote fits.

i  Second home owners

The property you are not always at.

Second homes and vacation properties are often the most neglected landscapes precisely because the owner is not there to manage them. A properly designed landscape requires less management, not more. Remote design is built for this.

ii  Properties outside the DMV

New England, the Hamptons, the Mountain West.

Our primary market is Northern Virginia, but the design discipline applies to any temperate property. New Hampshire, the Hamptons, the Piedmont of North Carolina, and the rural Mountain West are all markets we have designed for remotely.

iii  International clients

Anywhere with good photography and a soil test.

We have designed properties in Europe and the Caribbean using the remote consultation model. Time zone differences are manageable. Language is not a constraint. The design process works as long as the documentation is thorough.
